Current Projects
"Why should I try?" "Why should I bother?" "What's the point and who cares anyway?"
.....are questions many young people we come into contact with ask themselves on a regular basis, especially with many of the challenges we face.
ADHD Support Harrow recently received training in an exciting new programme designed for young people who face many difficulties in their everyday life.
Originating from America, where it has been successfully running for the past seven years, it aims to meet youth where they are at, and in a way they understand and remember. This simple idea has reduced truancy and improved learning. This has resulted in three times more 'at risk' students completing school therefore changing the climate in the 350 school districts where it is used.
So what is WhyTry?
It is a programme aimed at helping young people (12-18 years) overcome their challenges and improve their lives in areas of truancy, behaviour and learning. It uses the main learning styles, audio, visual and practical and does this through a series of ten pictures. Each picture teaches a main principle, such as resisting peer pressure, obeying laws and rules, and decisions have consequence. The pictures are all set to music and followed through with physical activities, making it fun and memorable.
The mission of the WhyTry is to help youth achieve opportunites, freedom and self respect.
Fourteen very special young people, many from the Kids Can Crew have just completed the first programme to be held here, and for us as facilitators it was an inspiring experience, to watch them work together as a team, support each other, learn new ways of coping in stressful situations and most importantly making the right choices.
Thanks to a PAYP grant we have begun to roll out our WhyTry project to Harrow's Schools. We are currently working with a group of Year 7s at Whitefriars School and so far it is being well received. The facilitators Gina, Jane and Antoine, although on a steep learning curve as this is their first WhyTry, are really impressed not only with the effort the kids are putting in to the programme but also how the school have really taken on the ethos of WhyTry and what it hopes to achieve.
We hope to run another one in the near future and if you are interested, please call 020 8868 5629.
And
from a mum............................
My son is 15 (going on 30) and the teenage torment is in full flow. Hormones
are taking over the family space and life is a little tense. However, thanks
to ADHD and their new programme WhyTry, we seem to be making some progress.
What is the difference in this programme? Well, it has made him think for
himself and realise his choices matter and will have an effect not only on
him but others. Finally we are slowly seeing some light at the end of what
was a seemingly endless tunnel. So thanks to Therese, Emma, Jane and all at
WhyTry.
